About VA
Research on the VA project began by Ciarán O'Kelly in 2004. Since the developement of the original language, there have been multiple versions of VA software which attempt to do translations in real time.
2004 - Visual Audio v1
VA1 dealt exclusively with signals from a MIDI keyboard and was limited to one note at a time. Samples of this can be viewed on the demos page.
2010 - Visual Audio v2
VA2 attempted to translate analog inputs such as microphone and instrument signals, however processing power on the computers of the time made this very challenging.
2014 - Visual Audio v3
VA 3 was an attempt to create a publicly downloadable piece of software using maxMSP. Despite good demand for the project, progress was very slow due to a huge number of other commitments.
2020 - VisualAudio v4
VA4 is a browser-based version of the app dealing exclusively with MIDI input. This version uses more advanced visuals and is in active development. You can try the latest beta build
